Trouble with multiple servers

Okay so I am brand new to dayz. I played a bunch of modded arma, and lots of modded rust, so when I logged onto a modded server I thought, this is cool, not what I really wanted considering I play PVE and like to kill ai and loot and build bases. So I tried to go to a different server. It wouldn't let me in, it said mods were server base and what not, so I tried a different character, no dice.
