Experienced players still lose everything when they die?

I'm new to DayZ and I'm just learning the game. I've seen many videos from experienced players who have bases and are all geared up with many weapons, cars etcetera. But even experienced players can die. Do they also lose all their loot when they die? Or do they get it back somehow?
