Best strategy to deal with gun noise?

I'm still pretty new to DayZ and I'm learning as I go. But one thing puzzles me. When I find a decent gun, magazine and ammo I'm afraid to use it because one shot attracts SO many zombies. Even a small pistol. I almost always get attacked by 4 or 5 zombies at the same time who will kill me. What is a good strategy for using a gun. Of course a silencer, but what if I don't have one or can't craft one or can't find a MK2? And I know already not to go in guns blazing. But even a single shot aler...
